What to Wear in the LDS Temple and Why
When members of the LDS religion enter the LDS Temples, they do so dressed in white. Women wear long white dresses. Men wear white pants, white ties, white shirts and white jackets. Sometimes children will accompany their parents into the temple to be sealed together as a family. This ordinance of sealing a family together forever is a sacred and holy opportunity for members of the LDS Church, and considered one of the greatest blessings that can be bestowed on anyone. When this occurs, all of the children in the family no matter how young also dress in white. Little girls wear pure White Dresses and young boys wear spotless white. Even infants dress completely in white. This is symbolic of so very much. Christ was unspotted from the world and we have been asked to do the same. In Doctrine and Covenants Section 76, verse 41 it says: That he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unreghteousness. The white that is worn in the LDS Temple is simply an outside reminder of the purity that all followers of him are trying to attain.
Throughout history there have been many Temple builders. The Egyptians and the Jews are cultures we are more familiar with. Each a distinct people and religion who regarded this sacred building as most holy. Entry inside such a structure meant being clean and having a desire to seek out diety. In that regard, the LDS people are very similar. But an LDS Temple represents so much more to members of the Mormon Church. It is the eternal connection with ones family and the desire to serve them as each member of the church grows closer to the Savior and our Heavenly Father. These structures hare held in such honor by members of the LDS Faith, that when one enters into their homes it is very likely that there will be a painting, sculpture or other form of artwork depicting one of these structures prominately displayed. LDS Temple artwork can be found thriving throughout the world. The LDS Temples inspire such feelings of reverence in members of the church, that from a very young age, pictures will be found on bedroom walls of very young children.
For most people, the only time they see a woman dressed all in white, it’s because she is just getting married. The dress is elaborate with beads and lace that have been painstakingly put together. But, the White Dresses that are worn by the women of the LDS faith in the LDS temple are much more subdued. Even the sealing dresses worn by children and infants when they are sealed to their parents are beautiful without being gaudy. The focus in the temple is on being pure before the Lord.
If someone stood outside of an LDS Temple they would just see nicely dressed individuals entering the Temple with Temple Cases and Bags in their hands. None of the people going in would be wearing white. It is inside the LDS Temple where people change into their Temple Dresses and suits. Keeping the White clothing in cases and bags helps to keep it from getting soiled before one changes into them in the temple. The nature of what goes on in the temple is sacred to the LDS (Mormon) people. They don’t generally talk about it to just anyone. It isn’t because there is a big secret. They are simply a people trying to grow closer to their God. In doing so, they build beautiful structures and dedicate them for the use of sealing families together forever. When entering the Temple, they dress completely in white as a token of their devotion to the Lord. These things are not a secret to these people, they are sacred.
