How to Score a Cheap Watch
We all know how important a wristwatch is. It’s widely held how most people would not leave the house without one and a lot of our gadgets, such as mp3 players, cellular phones and even digital cameras already tell the time. This is primarily because we all live in a busy world and as it gets busier and busier everyday, we need to keep track of how we spend our time. There are things which are worth doing more than others and demands could pile up fast. Simply put, the watch is totally the gadget for all seasons.
So with this knowledge, we look for the perfect watch. More and more brands are sprouting out of nowhere. More and more designers are coming out of nowhere, bringing more sophisticated designs at more sophisticated materials. This plethora of choices makes the watch hunt harder and harder, so we exhaust all our resources in finding the perfect one to wear everyday. And speaking of resources, it’s not just the source of the product but the money as well.
Having to buy the perfect watch on a tight budget may be a challenge. It cuts the possibilities of getting the exact watch you want because you are set back by not having enough resources to actually own it. But that’s not a really big problem. In fact, the plethora of choices brings all kinds of watches– cheap watches, expensive ones, local, imported, feminine, sporty ones to a level playing field with competitive prices. Watch companies are standing neck to neck in the competition for creating the best looking durable watch at a very attractive price. Seems like everybody’s looking for the perfect watch, right? So that’s factor number one in wearing the perfect mindset for buying a watch at a tight budget. Does that make you feel a lot better now? Read up for more tips.
1. Buy Second Hand. Second hand doesn’t always mean inferior. In fact, a lot of second hand watches are actually good finds. They’re cheaper because they have acquired depreciation but a lot of such watches are still working fine. You can get designer watches for as low as only half of their price once they age for some time and their brand releases newer models. You can also get ones from your friends or relatives, some people you trust, whenever they want to personally “pawn” it to you. Usually you get good deals with such arrangements.
Be extra cautious in buying second hand watches because the fact that they already passed through a previous owner gives it a history of its own. Check if it has been repaired or not and, to be sure, pay a watch technician for a check up and a run through of all its parts. This is especially useful if the watch is a classic, a designer watch, or something that originally costs high and then sold for an exponentially lower price. Next, be sure that the source is reliable. If it’s an exchange online forum where you don’t personally know the person, go with the technician’s check up AND get to know the owner. Look for his/her profile and view the feedbacks for that person. Also check the legitimacy of the website.
2. Dress up an old one. If you have an old watch which is not working anymore, save yourself some money and have it repaired. Go to a reliable watch repair center and shell out a few bucks to give your dear watch new life again. Of course, make sure it’s still practical to do so. If repairing your watch costs just as much as buying something as good and if you can let the old watch go anyway, then just buy a new one. But if you still highly believe in your old watch’s charm, have it repaired and dress it up. Buy a new strap if you want, polish it, clean its face and have all its parts rechecked. It makes you think that you own a totally different watch.
3. Buy local. Along with the line that competition among the watch companies is very tight, local watch companies also have strong showing in the market. You don’t really need to buy Rolex, Gucci or Tag Heuer all the time. There are a lot of local brands which are just as good as they are (and other Swiss watches). This is good because aside from saving money, you can also help the economy of your country. You support something that gives your countrymen jobs and you up the morale of your countrymen because your purchase of a local product is tantamount to saying that they have a competitive standing against their more rigid counterparts. Of course, that’s the noble side of it, a side that seems unimportant in buying a watch. The bottom line is, you’ve saved money and you got the watch that you want.
4. Expand your horizons. Go to places! Expand the possibilities in buying the perfect watch, you can go to local pawnshops, flea markets, trade fairs and a lot more. The trick here is to have as many choices as you can given your budget so it doesn’t feel like you’re left with just a few pieces which you don’t even fancy getting. There will always be a good deal around the corner. Pawnshops are great places to get fine watches cheaper because they cannot be accepted for pawning if they have low market values. Just be on the lookout for the ACTUAL market value of such watches. Flea markets are great places to get one-of-a-kind watches because they’re so full of unexpected treasures. They’re usually a hodgepodge of things which look, feel and sound unusual and who knows, the watch you’ve been waiting to have might just be there. Lastly, trade fairs are promotional events made to attract buyers for certain products which are either new to the market, are expecting a market re-entry or simply products which need to be promoted even more. Usually, prices are slashed in such trade fairs.
Good luck in finding the watch that you deem perfect for you! And remember, a great deal is just around the corner, so don’t give up easily. Everybody deserves a good watch to call his own.
