Head Scarf: Ways to Wear Cotton Head Scarves

The head scarf!   Women who are undergoing cancer treatments like chemotherapy, surgery and radiation…  the resulting hair loss is one other thing they have to cope with. The typical solution is to wear hats and wigs and while these accessories do the job of covering the head, a better alternative is at hand – the cotton head scarf!  These scarves are not only comfortable, they are also very stylish.

With the growing popularity of scarves in the fashion world, many women dealing with hair loss are finding that, thanks to cotton scarves, even if they are losing their hair, they don’t have to lose their sense of style with it. What’s more, unlike wigs, they can keep on using these scarves in other ways after treatment when their hair grows back. Tying scarves as a head cover is easy but if you’re using a silk scarf or any scarf with a similar smooth and slippery texture, it can be a challenge to keep the scarf in place. That’s why a cotton scarf makes a perfect head cover because it is not prone to slipping so you do not have to worry about accidentally exposing your head.

For added security, you can use padded scarf liners and hat liners. Aside from holding the head scarf securely, the padding of such liners also gives the impression of volume. There are also some liners with pockets designed to allow hairpieces like bangs to be safely attached. Using a cotton scarf together with these devices costs less compared with using wigs and they also help keep the wearer cool and comfortable.

Here are some simple ways to wear cotton scarves. It is recommended to use a large square scarf, 35 or 40 inches, to achieve the best results. The tying techniques shown here start with four simple steps: First, make a triangle with the scarf by folding it in half diagonally. Next, place the scarf on the head with the peak of the triangle positioned in the back.  Then, take the ends of the scarf and tie them together over the peak of the triangle in the back. Lastly, adjust the scarf gently from your back to one side.

Alternatively, on step 3, you can just tie the scarf on the side if this would be easier.  Now, we go to three style options for your head cover. One of the easiest styles to do is the bow. Once you’ve done the steps above, wrap the head scarf under the knot using an elastic band. Take some of the scarf and pull it through the elastic to make a bow. You can create the same effect of volume by tying another knot and then making a bow.

Another pretty style that is quick to do with cotton scarves is the side tie using a scrunchie. Following the basic steps described above, place one end of the scarf over the other to create a knot. Make the scarf look fuller by spreading the ends. Then, tie a scrunchie around the knot and pull the scarf ends through the scrunchie. Lay out the ends again for a fuller effect.

This next style, called a rosette, is also flattering and creates the impression that there is hair underneath. Again, follow the basic four steps above. Afterwards, tie one scarf end over and under the other. Twist together the ends a number of times and insert them into the top part of the knot.
Pull the ends just a bit through the knot so little of them are sticking out and then tuck once again back into the knot. Use a pin to hold the scarf together. If you will be wearing a padded scarf liner, you can pin the rosette to the liner to secure it in place.
